This renowned painter was born in Padang Tegal, Ubud. He confessed to be born 1908. Other data, as writhen in the book of Pengantar Koleksi Museum Neka, started that he was born in 1908, while in Seni Lukis Bali Tiga Generasi mentioned that he was born 1915. due to these differences, he was confused. So later on hi said to his friend that he might be born in 1910, the median of those two different years. His name also writhen by others as “Maregeg” (with an a). while he, himself, often wrote it as Mergeg (without e).

Meregeg was a painter with great reputation. In 1973, he received an award from Klungkung. In 1983, he was recipient of Wija Kusuma award from Gianyar. In 1988, he accepted an award from Balinese Governor during Bali Art Festival. In 1990, he received the Dharma Kusuma medal. He started to paint wayang theme since 1920. in1936, through Pita Maha, he developed his technique and knowledge. But he was already close with Walter spies – one of Pita Maha founder – several years before 1936.
