Anak Agung Gde Sobrat

About Artist Anak Agung Gde Sobrat

Anak Agung Gede Sobrat (1911-1992; padangtegal, Gianyar, Bali) first learned how to make wayangkulit (leather puppets) from his grandfather, Sobrat was one of the few Balinese who actually studied directly under Walter Spies (German, 1895-1942), from whom he learned about the principle of perspective and the use of light and shadow to create depth.

His works of dancers, market scenes, and village life include large figures which he learned later on from Rudolf Bonnet (Dutch, 1895-1978). From 1957-1959, Sobrat also taught art at the Akademi Senirupa Indonesia (ASRI, Indonesia Academy of fine Arts ) in Yogyakarta, Central Java.
