About Artist Djata

Djata was born in 1913 and he started his career has been done i Penandelan, Sukawati. Learned painting since 1928. He is the son of Wayan Keweh and Wayan Rewed. Prior to his years in painting, he had learned and worked as wood carver. he is also skilled wayang and barong carver. One day, he realized that his job as a wood carver would not answer his family's financial condition. Then Djata entered the art of painting. His early works - similiar to his fellow Batuan painter during his time - were done with mangsi on paper.

Djata learned painting since the age of 15. His reputation was outstanding. As joining the Pita Maha association led by Walter Spies and Bonnet in 1936, Djata was trusted to become one of the mentors along with his other two friends. Here, he taught 12 pupils.

His objects are varied. But mostly it has been about ngaben. In 1956, his painting was printed on glass by the exhibition organizer in New York. He also design book covers, such as Balinese Funeral. His name was mentioned in a book on artists published in USA.

He also received various award, including art awards from Indonesian Art Institute Yogyakarta and Balinese government in 1982, 1983 and 1985. He also received it from Listibya, Gianyar in 1974. He is recepient for Wija Kusuma medal in 1989 and various awards from Netherland, America, German and France. His works have been participated in exhibitions in Werdi Budaya (Denpasar), Bali Art Festival and several overseas museums.
