About Artist I Gusti Ketut Rundu
Born in Sanur, 1919. He learned painting from the Sanur and Ubud art community. In Ubud, he met Rudolf Bonnet whom later become his mentor. During 1930s, his work had drawn attention therfore he often considered as a prominent figures in Sanur art scene. When Rudolf Bonnet founded Pita Maha in 1936, he immedatley joined in. Though lived whitin between the strong influence of Ubud style. Rundu have maintained his Sanur style characterized by the strong lines and undetailed finishing. One of his painting illustrates horses in fight - collected by Museum Puri Lukisan - symbolizing his existence as Sanur painter. The particular work had been influenced by metamorphosis found in the great painter Maurtis Cornelius Escher's pieces. This influenced emerged as Rudolf Bonnet gave him a postcard with Escher painting. Bonnet had met the painter himself in 1972 during his trip to Italy. Other Sanur painter from Rundu's generation would be I Sukadi, I Gusti Made Rum, I Rauh, I Wayan Gunaksa Tukas, I Karsa, Ida Bagus kondra, I Gaek, I Sueca and I Dana. These painters had been influenced by the Batuan style and once were the objects of Gregory Bateson and Magaret Mead's research (from Princeton University, USA). Gregory Bateson and Margaret Mead's Sanur painter collection together with Kunstzall van Lier (Amsterdam) once was auction by Christie's on September 29,2001 under the title of Pre-War Balinese Modernist: 1928-1942.
