He was born in Tebesaya, Ubud in 1939. He painted under I Wayan Turun's teaching for three years since 1957. Afterward, he had learned the art within his surrounding until he developed his personal style. Aside from depiciting various mythologies including Rajapala, Berata also illustrates the Balinese daily lives of market scene with each figure doing a transaction. Sometime, he painted the performance art such as Oleg Tambulilingan dance in his lighter and pleasing works.
His paintings has been displayed in exhibitions in Bali to Jakarta.
