He is the son in law of I Wayan Gedot, also a painter. He did learned painting from Gedot. Thus, his father in law's srtyle clearly influenced his works and themes featuring animals of cow, ox, cricket and frog. In 1980, he joined an association led by I Made Gina. He was born in Pengosekan, Ubud, 1944.

Gelgel paintings are on display in Museum Puri Lukisan (Ubud), Neka Museum (Ubud), Taman Budaya (Denpasar) and Bentara Budaya Jakarta. His works often participated in variouos exhibitionsm in Jakarta and other countries. GNM Sudarta who compiled Seni Lukis Bali dalam Tiga Generasi (PT Gramedia, 1985) named Gelgel's works as reflection of the agriculutral and peaceful Bali. This Gelgel is differnt from older Gelgel of Kamasan.
