I Wayan Asta

About Artist I Wayan Asta

He was born in Taman Kaja-Ubud in 1954. He learned art seriously in 1967 from his uncle, the renowned Ubud Painter I Nyoman Meja. At first he often illustrated various themes of mythology an Ubud's daily life. But in 1980, he began to explore animal kingdom themes with paintings of poultry and squirrel. His works matured and dominated with greenish brown colour. However, during 1990s, he was intrested in monkey. This reason is the fact that his studio where he learned was located close to Ubud's Monkey Forest in Central Ubud. He then focused his works in the animal world and personified them as human being.

Asta works are collected by prominent art collectors and museums in Bali, such as Museum Puri Lukisan (Ubud), Arma Museum (Ubud), Museum Rudana (Ubud), and also Museum Graha Lukisan in Jakarta. His works once participated in the national Indofood Art Award 2002 and Phillip Morris Art Awards in 1997. He also joined several important exhibitions, including Jakarta International Fine Art Exhibition 1994 and several Taman Budaya Denpasar's exhibition.
