I Wayan Djumu

About Artist I Wayan Djumu

Born in Tangkup, Tegalalang-Ubud, 1959. At first, he painted in Balinese traditional style and drew together with the art community in his neighbourhood. Entering the Art High School in Ubud, he painting reflected modern influences. But it did not last long as his mentor, I Ketut Budiana, encouraged him to return and explore the traditional art. Although he works in Ubud, Djumu's style is not altogether Ubud's style. This is also reflected on his themes in which he departed from the common theme of Balinese daily life found in Ubud style.

He often illustrates butakala, symbol of evil, in battle againts the guardian of good. His colours are greyish with colourful accent on several places. His works show subtlety and detail. therefore even though his themes are dark ones, the visualizations are picturesque. His works have been displayed in various exhibitions in Bali and Jakarta. In its April 2005 edition, Laras dedicated an artical on him.
