About Artist I Wayan Urip
Barong performances in the gardens of the pura are regular themes of Balinese paintings. But Urip transforms ordinary barong events into something different, making them appear as abstract paintings when viewed from a certain distance. He does so with painterly skill, and through colour combinations which are far from natural representations, while his compositions make elements of form appear in a disarray. Due to this free style amidst the prevailing mode of detailed nyangging, Urip's name become highlighted in the constellation of Ubud art of the 1980s. Urip was born on a Saturday in 1957 (he does not know the date or month) in Banjar Tebesaya, Ubud. He was tutored by I Nyoman Manggih, who also taught him to be close to the tradition of rame-rame attraction to Bali's ceremonies. Often participating in joint exhibitions, his works are also included in the book Living Tradition in Balinese painting (1991) by Alisan Tylor.
