Widayat (1923- ; Kutoarjo, Central Java (studied at the Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia (ASRI, Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts) in Yogyakarta, Central Java, where he also became a lecturer after graduating. He helped to establish the Pelukis Indonesia Muda (Young Indonesian Artists) group in 1952 in Yogyakarta. In 1960 Widayat received a grant to study ceramics and traditional landscaping in Nagoya, Japan. In 1994 he established the Museum H Widayat located on the grounds of his home in Magelang, Central Java. His works are described as "magical decorative", with rhythmic repetitions of motifs derived from traditional and primitive art. They are rich in texture, color, and symbolism. Awards: Piagam Anugerah Seni (Indonesia, 1972), ASEAN award (1993). Exhibitions (1974), Fukuoka Art Museum (Japan, 1980), Asian Art Exhibition (Bahrain, 1981), Tropenmuseum (Amsterdam, Holland, 1982), Taman Ismail Marzuki (Jakarta, Indonesia, 1984, 1986, 1988), Festival of Indonesia (U.S.A., 1990-1992), Centre for Strategic and International Studies (Jakarta, 1996), Indonesia-Japan Friendship Festival (Morioka, Tokyo, 1997).
