I Wayan Pendet

If anybody would state that the humourous and witty atmosphere depicted in strangely surreal look of Balinese traditional painting only exist in I Dewa Putu Mokoh's work, it would be a false opinion. Since I Nyoman Pendet also has the similiar style. The painter who was born in 1936 illustrates Balinese figures through caricatural deformation. Thus his works are the fragments of comedy that often mock the viewers. Through this humourous style in soft tone of teritary colours, he would present various scenes such as people playing gamelan, girl dancing, men hunting the wild boar, children playing and pan brayut story.

Pendet has been known as a painter who also sculpt to a point that he would be more popular as a sculptor rather than painter. Aside from his artistic profession, he also works as a pemangku (priest) in Alit Nyuh Kuning Temple. He has eight children with various occupations such as sculptor, healer, architect and language expert. Several of his works have been discussed extensively in the book that was written by Arend de Roever and Duco van Weerlee, Painting an Invisible World, and published by The Pepin Press (Amsterdam-Kuala Lumpur)
