Wayan Kaler

Born in Penestanan, Ubud, around 1960 and later moved to Sayan Baung (not far from Penestanan). For to year, he learned painting from I Made Sinteg, Young Artist figure, who happened to be Arie Smit’s firt student. Kaler’s works combined Sinteg naivety and vivid colours, the detailed-complicated Ubud style of painting and perspective-orientid modern art. A combination cleverly deficted by Kaler and followed by other painters, including I Ketut Darso, I Made Darsana, I Made Amoh, I Nyoman Merta and others. “Kalerism” during the 1990s attracted a lot of attentions in Balinese art scene and has been a commodity for tourist. Kaler’s works has been exhibited in Bali, Jakarta and various international cities.
